Following the dramatic cancellation of the development of Football Manager 25, Sports Interactive has finally unveiled Football Manager 26. For the first time, the game actually looks like football, with more detail and accuracy in the battle engine than ever before.

The big news, and the focus of an enticing one-minute, twelve-second trailer, is the new battle engine, now powered by Unity. For many years, Football Manager has been the ultimate spreadsheet simulator – a game where the beauty lay in the numbers, tactical tweaks and sheer joy of watching your carefully crafted 3-4-3 system take 30 shots, score none and lose 1-0. Despite the level of detail and accuracy the game offered, the combat often lacked the spectacular.

The transition to Unity is not just about beautiful images. Sports Interactive promises smoother 3D animations, lifelike ball physics and more natural player movement – maybe bike kicks won’t look as crazy anymore. That means your virtual players might finally stop looking like Bambi on ice.

In addition to the graphical upgrade, the FM26 also gets a modernized, tile- and card-based interface for smoother navigation on PC, console, and mobile. The AI has been given a scratch and is now expected to offer smarter tactical behavior and deeper decision-making. Your opponents will no longer blindly go in for a high pressure against your fast wingers, at least in theory.

For purists, there’s even bigger news: the game will finally hold the official Premier League license, which means real kits, crests, and logos. This is a game-changer for those who have spent years downloading their favorite club’s crest on a generic red shirt. In addition, women’s football finally debuts, with leagues, clubs and tournaments added to the database. There are some notable omissions, such as touchline shouts and national team football, but even without these, this seems like a significant upgrade from previous versions.

While a precise release date is still unknown, the game is expected to launch somewhere towards the end of 2025, likely in early to mid-November. So start clearing your calendar, prepare the excuses for neglecting your loved ones, and maybe invest in a new video card. Because Football Manager 26 is coming, and it might be the most beautiful excuse for sleepless nights you’ve ever seen. Or at least the most beautiful Football Manager you’ve ever seen. Which, to be honest, is not a very high threshold.
