rumour
Relevo claims that Virgil van Dijk’s agents have spoken to Real Madrid about a blockbuster free transfer over the summer, only for the Spanish side to turn down the opportunity to seal a deal.
Our opinion
A strange one, this. Firstly, it’s mental that Liverpool have let Van Dijk’s contract expire to such a point that he could even talk to Madrid in the first place, but Los Blancos’ reluctance to make a deal is equally confusing.
Sure, 33 years old, Van Dijk starts a little. He is clearly a short-term solution to a problem, but is it that bad? Carlo Ancelotti has been operating with one senior centre-back for what feels like an eternity, so why not take a year or two with Van Dijk while you find a long-term solution?
