Football legend Åge Hareide passed away on Thursday, surrounded by his family. He was 72 years old.
Hareide was diagnosed with brain cancer in July, and died after a short illness. “Dad fell asleep tonight, at home with his family around him. Now he has played his last game. We are eternally grateful for all the love we have received during the time he has been ill,” his son Bendik writes to VG.
The man from Hareid was one of Norwegian football’s most prominent personalities over five decades. He was an active player for 17 years.
As a coach, he had great success all over Scandinavia. He won league championships in Norway, Sweden and Denmark, and took Malmö FF to the Champions League. His greatest achievement came as national team coach of Denmark, when he led them to the 2018 World Cup, where the team was eliminated in a dramatic round of 16 against eventual finalist Croatia.
For his achievements, he was named Danish Coach of the Year and appointed Knight of the Order of the Danebrog. In Norway, he was awarded Kniksen’s honorary award.
