Liverpool have been linked with an attempt to hire Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso, and that’s exactly who the Reds should be aiming for if they do sack Arne Slot.

Recent reports have claimed that Real Madrid manager Alonso is on the verge of being sacked in Spain and if they lose to Manchester City, he could be on his way out. The news may come as a shock to many football fans, as Madrid are fighting at the top of the La Liga table as expected, while also sitting fifth in the Champions League table.

Even Slot is under increasing pressure at Anfield after a disappointing season, and while he doesn’t immediately appear to be in danger of being sacked, there is an argument that Liverpool should consider a change of manager.

A lot will be decided in the next few days. Liverpool face Inter Milan later today on Tuesday in the Champions League, while Real Madrid on Wednesday host Manchester City.

Liverpool need to hire Xabi Alonso

Alonso did a fantastic job during his time at Bayer Leverkusen, where he won the Bundesliga title in the 2023/2024 season, which is considered almost impossible due to Bayern Munich’s dominance. Alonso also won the German Cup that season, before lifting the Super Cup the following season.

The former Spanish midfielder has a close relationship with Liverpool supporters, having played for the Merseyside club in his active career. The Reds have also been linked with another of their former players, Steven Gerrard, but there is no doubt that Alonso has more pedigree as a coach at a higher level.

If Liverpool do indeed decide on a move, Alonso could be the ideal candidate to lead the team forward.

Edwards is ‘obsessed’ with Xabi Alonso to Liverpool

Liverpool director Michael Edwards is “obsessed” with Alonso’s tactical setup. The Spanish coach was Liverpool’s first choice after Jürgen Klopp decided to leave Anfield, before they went on to hire Slot.

The timetable for all of this could fall neatly into place over the next few weeks, especially if both Liverpool and Real Madrid are going through difficult periods. Both Slot and Alonso seem to be under pressure, and there could be perfect logic in the latter returning to Anfield.

The hiring of Alonso, described as “elite” by analyst EBL, seems almost too obvious if Slot is sacked, so it will be interesting to see if his situation changes in the coming weeks in Madrid.

There has been talk of bringing in Steven Gerrard as a crisis solution, right now it doesn’t look very likely.
