A former Manchester United star is among the favourites to take over from Phil Parkinson at Wrexham following their exit from the Carabao Cup. – Wrexham owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have put in big money for their very hefty ambitions to become an English giant with regular play in the Premier League. Thus, the downturn with a loss to one of his rivals (on the way up) became even greater.

On Tuesday evening, the Red Dragons took on Welsh rivals Cardiff City at the Racecourse Ground.

A huge setback for a club that sees itself as Premier League material

However, it was a terrible night for the Championship club, as League One side Cardiff claimed a 2-1 win thanks to goals from Yousef Salech and Will Fish. Kieffer Moore was the scorer for the hosts.

When the final whistle sounded, you could hear boos from the home crowd expressing their dissatisfaction.

Speaking after the game, Wrexham boss Parkinson said: “We weren’t in the first half and that’s probably an understatement. We made it too easy for them and when you don’t have the real intention in your pressing, you tend to be sloppy in ball possession as well.”

“To give them credit, they pushed us high, pushed us into mistakes, and we didn’t handle it well enough.”

He added: “In the second half, the changes got us back in the game, but we probably didn’t produce the right decisions at the right time in the top third of the pitch to create the chances to go and win the match.”

As a result of Wrexham’s cup exit, plus their shaky form in the Championship, Parkinson is under increasing pressure.

Wrexham have won just one of their last seven games, a narrow 1-0 win over Oxford United in the Championship last week, and they are currently 16th in the league table.

With Parkinson’s position under scrutiny, the latest odds on a potential replacement have emerged.

According to Sportbible, names such as Gary O’Neil (4/1), Ruben Selles (7/1), Steven Gerrard (9/1) and Ruud van Nistelrooy (11/1) are all among the favourites.

Meanwhile, former United defender Phil Jones is a shocking inclusion, with odds set at 15/2 for him to take over as Wrexham boss.

Wrexham are back in Championship action on Friday night when they host Frank Lampard’s successful Coventry City at the Racecourse Ground.
