The FIA, which is responsible for approving new regulations, calendars and awards for drivers on a daily basis, will look into new disturbing reports. The FIA Council will look into allegations of leakage of confidential information from FOM to Mercedes team leader Toto Wolff.
For several days, the media have been speculating that a member of the FOM staff provided confidential information to the head of the Mercedes team. Suspicions about the information leak were to be intensified at the meeting of the heads of all F1 teams. Toto Wolff allegedly knew before everyone else about exceeding Red Bull’s budget limit, 2023 car designs, as well as about the new technical rules imposed in Singapore.
On December 5, the FIA decided to comment on the matter and announce what it intended to do with the reports.
The FIA made its move: “We are aware of media speculation centred on the allegation of information of a confidential nature being passed to an F1 team principal from a member of FOM [F1] personnel. The FIA compliance department is looking in to the matter.”
Mercedes also made its move: “We note the generic statement from the FIA this evening, which responds to unsubstantiated allegations from a single media outlet, and the off-record briefing which has linked it to the team principal of Mercedes-AMG F1.”
