The story of Donny van de Beek at Old Trafford can be briefly summed up in missigning. The Dutchman had done his thing in an Ajax shirt, but in the Premier League or with Solskjaer, Ragnick or Ten Hag, the midfielder simply didn’t fit in. We remember when Solskjaer had Van de Beek “thrown in his lap” in 2020, there was something aimless from the United management. On Tuesday, the 27-year-old got to show off from a completely different side than at Old Trafford.

Van de Beek has had loan spells with Everton and Eintracht Frankfurt behind him without success, it was only when the Dutchman was completely done with Manchester United in July that it came off.

Girona president Pere Guardiola explains in an interview with The Telegraph why Van de Beek is now succeeding at Girona.

“He came to United and was unlucky, lost momentum with different coaches and different players and got injured. He was on a team that struggled to play attacking football, and he needs that kind of football,” the Girona president begins.

-Now we are in a position where our football suits him very well, the Spanish league suits him very well, knowing that he needed time. He had two, three years without really playing, and every day you can see that he is getting better,” says Pere Guardiola.

Van de Beek already has 19 appearances for Girona (1 goal, 2 assists), on Tuesday the Dutchman helped shake unbeatable Liverpool to a near-defeat in the Champions League.
