When Erik ten Hag reigned at Old Trafford, the order to the United management was clear: Get me Frenkie de Jong!. It went so far that United agreed with the Barcelona management, who desperately needed euros to manoeuvre within the financial requirements of La Liga. Ten Hag’s former midfield general at Ajax refused to budge. Linked to exit in every transfer window since 2023, it is now moving towards signing, but not exit.

In Hansi Flick’s first season as Barcelona manager, De Jong made a solid 46 appearances on the pitch. Now club and player have agreed that there is enough wobbling.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona have decided that they cannot lose De Jong, who has a contract expiring next summer. As an important piece in Flick’s tactical plans, the La Liga giant has now negotiated an agreement with the 28-year-old.

The Spanish media claims a contract until 2029 is ready for signing, where a very happy De Jong in the role at Flick has agreed to a pay cut in order to put in place an extension. This means that 263 games in a Barca shirt is just the beginning for Frenkie de Jong.
