The story of Frenkie de Jong in a Barcelona shirt has plenty of surprising twists and turns. Manchester United and Barcelona reportedly agreed on a transfer for the Dutchman, who blocked and stayed. Then there have been statements from the management “how important De Jong is to the team”, only to open up for sale the next moment. Now it is reported that things are coming to a head between the 27-year-old and the La Liga giant.
Until September, De Jong has mostly been injured, after which Hansi Flick has given the Dutchman crumbs of playing time. Barcelona want to extend with the Dutchman with a contract expiring in the summer of 2026, but are not willing to jack up his salary.
Spanish outlet Revelo reported last month Barcelona have given De Jong the ultimatum to extend without a salary increase – or allow himself to be sold. The Spanish media claims that the Dutchman has remained completely passive about this and has not given any signs that he is signing or allowing himself to be pushed out.
Doesn’t exactly sound like a harmonious working relationship.
