Borussia Dortmund went into the game knowing that a win would put pressure on league leaders Bayern, but the visitors created the first chance right from kick-off. Ji-Sung Lee, who has extended his contract with Mainz this week, came close to scoring his fifth goal against Dortmund after a nice heel pass from Phillip Tietz.
At the other end, Serhou Guirassy’s appeal for a penalty was in vain after a duel inside the box with Stefan Posch. But the Guinean international scored his tenth goal of the season in the tenth minute with a brilliant header from Julian Ryerson’s free-kick delivery.

Five minutes later, it was 2-0 to the home team when the Norwegian defender served the other striker. From open play, Ryerson found Maximilian Beier, and the German international netted his seventh of the season with an excellent header from a difficult angle.
Silas had a good chance to reduce immediately, but the January signing failed to test Gregor Kobel from a promising position. The next big situation saw Guirassy again seek contact inside Mainz’s box. Urs Fischer’s team suffered a further setback with an injury to their record holder for the number of games, Stefan Bell, before the half-hour was played.
After Felix Nmecha’s shot was saved for another set-piece for Dortmund, Ryerson added a third assist to his name before half-time. Guirassy completed his double goal with a header from close range after Ryerson’s corner.

Apart from a clear offside goal by captain Silvan Widmer, Mainz had few chances after conceding the second goal. Kovac gave 18-year-old Luca Reggiani his home debut when the Italian defender replaced the cautioned Niklas Süle at the start of the second half.
Daniel Batz kept the result respectable by disarming Nmecha and Beier, while Mainz failed to create anything noteworthy at the other end. The relegation-threatened side had to wait until the 75th minute for their first chance after half-time, but they did manage to reduce Dortmund’s chances after the hour had been played.
However, they conceded the fourth goal from another Ryerson delivery, when his precise corner forced Dominik Kohr to put the ball in his own net. Ironically, Mainz’s best chance of the game came from a corner, when Kobel fended off substitute Nelson Wieper in the closing stages.
Besides the comfortable result against the team that had won four of their last five games, there were many positives for Niko Kovac’s team as they extended their winning streak to six games before facing RB Leipzig and Bayern Munich. It is also their sixth straight home win in the Bundesliga.
Kovac’s team is also looking forward to the Champions League play-off match against Atalanta in the next two weeks. As for Mainz, they will hope to resume their progress when they host Hamburger SV in another Friday game next week.
Things are going well for Borussia Dortmund, who tonight won their sixth straight Bundesliga game.
Julian Ryerson (28) is on fire for Dortmund. – The Lyngdøling had three assists already before halftime in the Bundesliga match against Mainz.
The first came after ten minutes. The national team defender hit a free kick that striker Serhou Guirassy headed into the goal.
A quarter of an hour into the game, Ryerson hit a cross to the back post, where Maximilian Beier tricked in 2-0.
The third assist came on a corner. Once again, the Norwegian found the forehead of Guirassy, who increased to 3-0 before the break.
“Dortmund pretty much just did what was needed, but were very effective on their heads – thanks in large part to Ryerson who set up three goals,” Bild writes in its live coverage.
The match ended with result 4 – 0.
