Roma coach Gian Piero Gasperini insists he will choose Paulo Dybala over Evan Ferguson ‘every single time’ and hopes that the January transfer window will ‘help’ the Giallorossi.

Evan Ferguson is on loan from Brighton to Roma until next summer. – The Italian capital club has a purchase option that I am now reasonably uncertain if will be triggered.

Roma lost 2-1 to Juventus on Saturday at the Allianz Stadium, leaving the Bianconeri just one point below them in the Serie A table.

Dybala started the game in attack for the Giallorossi, but Ferguson came on as a substitute in the second half.

Gasperini said in his post-match interview with Sky Sport Italia that the Irish international was still not convincing, and during his press conference, he added more on the matter.

“If I had to choose between Dybala and Ferguson, I would choose Dybala every single time. It’s not about Ferguson; it’s a choice I’ve made before, and if that’s the choice, I’ll choose Dybala.”

It’s no secret that Gasperini wants at least one new striker in the January window, and after the defeat to Juventus, he openly admitted that he hopes the club will bring in reinforcements next month.

“I don’t know if it will come from the transfer market, but it’s definitely a possibility,” he said.

“I’m very happy with the performance, the attitude was admirable, but we’ve lost to Inter, Milan, Juventus and Napoli, and that’s no coincidence. This means that we are missing a step. We are close in certain situations, but we have an important fan base and an important club behind us. We have to aim to improve and I hope the January transfer window can help us with that. It’s not easy, but we have to believe.”

Evan Ndicka is on national team duty, while Mario Hermoso was dealing with the muscle strain last night and sat the entire game on the bench, so Jan Ziolkowski started in defence. Gasperini was pleased with the 20-year-old player’s performance, despite some “mistakes.”

“It’s not surprising, we lost Ndicka and Hermoso, two of the three pillars of defense. Ziolkowski played a very good game,” Gasperini concluded.

“He is a player with great potential. It wasn’t easy playing against Juventus’ attackers, but he did well despite a few mistakes that anyone can make. He is a player with excellent prospects.”
