Gian Piero Gasperini has put an end to a historic era at Atalanta. The 67-year-old coach, who has been a real symbol for the Bergamo club since his arrival in 2016, announced his resignation through an emotional letter published in L’Eco di Bergamo. Here he emphasized that the decision was completely personal and not due to any conflict with the club.

Under his leadership, Atalanta experienced its most successful period in recent times, with an offensive and dynamic style of play that won the enthusiasm of both fans and Italian football. The highlight of his legacy came this season with triumph in the Europa League and a respectable third place in Serie A, which secured new Champions League participation.

His next club has already been decided
Although rumours of his possible departure have been circulating, Gasperini has now confirmed it, explaining that he needs “new challenges” after almost a decade at the helm of the project. His next destination seems clear: all signs point to him taking over Roma, replacing Claudio Ranieri who returned temporarily, leaving the capital club in the European zone. Atalanta are also hot this year, for the third year in a row above Roma in the table.

La Gazzetta dello Sport writes that the Italian will sign a new deal with Roma until the summer of 2028, despite Juventus’ best attempts to hijack him.

The veteran boss believed that he would find himself in a more suitable environment at Roma and not at Juve, due to the Bianconeri’s constant changes in management. Gasperini had already met Dan Friedkin on Thursday in a convincing face-to-face meeting and they exchanged ideas and visions about the future of the club.

The Roman club’s owners had hosted Gasperini at a resort in Florence, and they made the manager feel important. This made Gasperini believe that he will be heard at Roma and his ideas have a place.

A three-year contract has now been accepted by ‘Mister’.

Atalanta, on the other hand, are already in the process of finding a worthy replacement, with Thiago Motta and Raffaele Palladino as the main candidates. Thus, an unforgettable era for Bergamo comes to an end, marked by Gasperini’s firm and brilliant hand, which is now seeking new success in the capital.
