According to German media, Cesc Fabregas has overtaken Erik ten Hag as the favorite to succeed Xabi Alonso as coach of Bayer Leverkusen.

The reigning Bundesliga champions are on the hunt for a new coach following Alonso’s announcement that he will leave the club at the end of the season. The Spaniard will take over from Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid, forcing Leverkusen to look for a suitable replacement.

Last week, it looked like Erik ten Hag was going to take over for Alonso, with reports that the Dutchman was the main option after a positive first encounter. Ten Hag has been out of work since he was sacked by Manchester United in October and has made no secret of the fact that he wants to secure a new coaching job this summer.

Unfortunately for the former United manager, a lot can change in a week, and he is no longer the favourite for the Leverkusen job.

Should Fabregas leave Como?
According to Sky Deutschland, Leverkusen are now working hard to secure Como coach Cesc Fabregas. Contrary to some reports, the Bundesliga club did not receive an immediate no from the former Arsenal and Chelsea player.

This response made CEO Fernando Carro and sporting director Simon Rolfes put in a greater effort to bring in Fabregas, who has previously rejected all approaches to remain at Como – a club he partly owns.

Reporter Florian Plettenberg states that a possible departure from the Serie A club is now becoming “increasingly likely”. His players and agents associated with the club receive a “signal” that he may be leaving.

Fabregas, who has usually been very clear in dismissing rumours, expressed himself less categorically after Como’s win over Cagliari on Saturday.

“I want to leave an important legacy, because whoever comes after me will find something good,” he began.

“I’m very calm. If you’re good today, you do the same thing in the next game and lose, then you’re no longer good. But my message has never changed. Whatever happens, I want to thank this group – I’m very proud of what we see in Como.”

It remains to be seen whether Fabregas will end up at Leverkusen or on the other side of Germany, where RB Leipzig are also said to have a concrete interest. Oliver Glasner is also an option, while Ten Hag has been dismissed by “Head of Global Soccer” Jürgen Klopp as inappropriate for Red Bull’s style of play.
