Despite Barcelona being nine points down on Real Madrid, the Barça coach is not thrilled.

FC Barcelona took a big step this weekend in the battle for the La Liga title. Hansi Flick’s side beat Espanyol 4-1 after two goals from Ferran Torres, as well as goals from Lamine Yamal and Marcus Rashford. Thus, Barcelona has 79 points and a nine-point lead over Real Madrid, with seven games left to play.

At a press conference, the Blaugrana coach was asked about the possibility of winning the club’s 29th league title. Flick responded calmly, stressing that despite the lead over the team in second place, the title is far from assured.

“It has not been done. We have to do our job. We cannot say that it has already been decided. That attitude is wrong, and I do not accept it. Until that is mathematically decided, we have to play our best football,” Flick said.

The German manager described everything his team has achieved so far this season as “amazing”, especially considering the many injuries the team has struggled with.

Hansi Flick on the match against Atlético: “We don’t need a miracle”

On Tuesday, April 14, FC Barcelona will face Atlético de Madrid at the Estadio Metropolitano in the second leg of the Champions League quarter-finals.

In the first leg at Spotify Camp Nou, Atlético won 2-0. When Flick was asked about the return, he was clear: To secure a semi-final spot, his team “only” needs to play their best football.

“We don’t need a miracle, we just have to play our best football. We are able to do that. I know Atlético is a fantastic team, but so are we. We’re going to fight, and I’m sure the fans will support us down there and be ready,” Flick said.

Ferran Torres broke his goal drought with two goals in the win against Espanyol

The Blaugrana now have 79 points in LaLiga and are closing in on the league gold. Barcelona beat Espanyol 4-1 this weekend to claim their 26th win of the season in the Spanish top flight.

Ferran Torres scored two of the goals, while Lamine Yamal and Marcus Rashford accounted for the rest.

With his two goals against Espanyol, Ferran broke a goal drought that had lasted since January 31, when he scored against Elche. The Spanish striker had gone 15 games without netting, when you count both club and country matches.

The 26-year-old has delivered strongly in the 2025/2026 season. In total, he has played 43 games for FC Barcelona in all competitions (LaLiga, Champions League, Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup), scored 17 goals and had one assist.

Can Barcelona come as LaLiga champions to El Clásico?

Barcelona and Real Madrid meet on May 10 at Spotify Camp Nou. Then Hansi Flick’s team can come as fresh league champions in the classic against the Merengue team.

If the Catalans win the games against Celta de Vigo, Getafe and Osasuna, they will reach 88 points and be crowned Spanish champions – regardless of what Real Madrid achieves.

Although Barcelona are very close to securing the LaLiga title, the club’s priority is still to turn around the 0-2 deficit in the second leg of the Champions League quarter-finals against Atlético Madrid.
