Rumours in the industry suggest that England’s captain could make a shocking return before the 2026 World Cup.

England captain Harry Kane and runner-up with 213 goals on the Premier League’s top scorers list are being considered for a return to the Premier League.

Eternal top scorer!

Harry Kane has spent the last two seasons at Bayern Munich, where he finally secured his first trophy of his career by winning the Bundesliga in 2024/25. The 32-year-old has scored 85 goals across competitions for the Bavarian giants and was the top scorer in the Bundesliga both seasons at Bayern – while also being named Bundesliga Player of the Year last season.

Tottenham Hotspur’s and England’s all-time highest-scoring player left the north London-based club in 2023 after scoring 213 Premier League goals in his last ten seasons there.

Potential return to England

Now, as he prepares for his third season with the German champions, reports of interest in bringing him back to England are emerging.

According to The Telegraph, the striker could end his career with one last transfer home.

“Rumours are already starting to circulate in the industry that Harry Kane will consider a return to England after the 2026 World Cup,” writes Matt Law.

“There is a clause in his Bayern Munich contract that reportedly decreases every year, and insiders believe the German club may be willing to negotiate next summer.”

Tottenham have the right of first refusal – but United are favourites

The transfer deal that took Kane to Bayern two years ago included a right of first refusal for Spurs, but the player himself must accept the terms of an emotional return.

However, his former club could face significant competition within the Premier League.

“There is no set sum in Spurs’ pre-emption deal, which means the club still has to match his release clause or negotiate a price with Bayern,” Law adds.

“Despite Tottenham’s right of first refusal, sources believe Manchester United are currently the most likely target for Kane if he leaves Bayern”

United’s long interest

Kane was consistently linked with Manchester United in his final years in London.

United’s admiration for the England captain is well documented, and it was known that Kane’s desire to win trophies that match his individual records could push him towards a new challenge.

While United’s problems under Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim have shown that Kane probably made the right choice by avoiding a club that could not be solved with a new head coach or an elite striker, it seems that the door is not completely closed.

According to reports, Kane’s buyout clause will drop to £54 million for English clubs in January.

How likely is a transition?
With Bayern Munich in transition phase and Kane soon to be 33, a return to the Premier League could be on the cards – either to help Tottenham to new heights or to give United the ready-made goalscorer they need.

One thing is for sure: the industry is keeping an eye on the situation, and next summer could be crucial for England’s greatest striker in modern times.
