Harry Kane. Victor Osimhen. Viktor Gyökeres. Hugo Ekitike. There is hardly a top striker who has not been linked to Manchester United in the last six months. With the pressure of “must sell to buy”, United cannot act as before in the transfer market, where the club was willing to go to great lengths to secure players the coaches wanted. So when selling clubs like Sporting push up the price of Amorim’s favourite striker Gyökeres, United will have to turn to another candidate. Then we are back to one of the original first choices.

According to The Athletic, United tried to secure a swap earlier this summer, with Marcus Rashford going to Aston Villa on a permanent transfer, while Villa sent Ollie Watkins to Old Trafford.

Watkins stands with an impressive 75 goals in 184 Premier League games in a Villa shirt, exactly what United need from a pure striker.

This deal fell apart, as Rashford pushes to sign with Barcelona. Now the English media reports that the United management is back on the Watkins track and is in contact with Villa. Arsenal made a £50 million bid for Watkins in January, but were quickly turned down. Emery was not willing to lose his star striker midway through the season.

According to the English media, rules for sustainable and profitable club operations could “motivate” Aston Villa to sell Watkins this summer. United, who have Cunha in place and Mbeumo on their way in, will have to sell players to make room for a Watkins signing, but show with the latest contact with Villa that the pile points to Watkins.

Cunha has shown he scores with ease in the Premier League, Mbeumo the same. With also a Watkins at the top, Manchester United are equipped in attack for the Premier League season that we can hardly remember in the post-Ferguson era.
