Manchester City star Rodri keeps the door ajar for Real Madrid – despite Atlético past

He says “Having played for Atlético Madrid doesn’t stop me from playing for Real Madrid”

Rodrigo Hernández is back. After the serious injury that kept him out for months, the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner is ready for new matches. At 29, he aims to become Spain’s midfield general in this summer’s World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico.

The Manchester City star has a contract until June 2027, but the speculation about a move to Real Madrid will not subside.

From Spain’s national team camp, before Friday’s friendly against Serbia, Rodri himself spoke out in an interview with Radioestadio Noche at Onda Cero.

When asked if he would like to play for arch-enemy Real Madrid, he replied:

“Having played for Atlético Madrid doesn’t stop me from playing for Real Madrid. There are other players who have gone that route. Maybe not directly, but over time. You can’t say no to the best clubs in the world.

He was also asked if he has ever heard Real Madrid’s president or CEO express interest.

“I don’t know. They don’t talk to me. They’re talking to my agent,” he replied.

And when the conversation finally turned to a possible return to Spain and Madrid, he left the door open:

“I would like to return, yes. Absolutely. I have one year left on my contract. There comes a time when we need to sit down and talk.
