Now Harry Kane has been told he could be a ‘fantastic’ kicker in the NFL after his football career. (NB: In American Football, players almost always wear an elliptical-shaped leather ball with henna)

England’s captain has made no secret of his passion for American football in the past.

Former NFL star J.J. Watt explains how Harry Kane can make a unique shift from football and become an NFL kicker.

However, a former Super Bowl champion has now backed Kane’s potential career change.

Dustin Colquitt spent 15 seasons as a punter for the Kansas City Chiefs and won the Super Bowl in 2020.

He believes Kane has all the skills required to make the transfer to the NFL if he ‘focuses’ on the transfer.

Kane has previously hinted at an interest in making the switch, admitting in 2023: “I know it’s going to be a lot of hard work.

I don’t expect to just show up and start kicking field goals. It would take a lot of practice.”

His current contract with Bayern Munich expires in the summer of 2027, and at that time, Kane will be 33 years old.

However, Colquitt doesn’t expect that to stop Kane, as he was asked if he could become an NFL kicker.

He told BBC Sport: “Absolutely, if he focused on that. He would have done great. I’ve seen some of his finishing skills.

I would love to actually work with him just because I love football, and his enthusiasm. He’s searching for this – it’s part of the fiber of his being, that he wants to try this NFL thing.”

NFL kickers take field goal and extra point attempts during games, and often also act as the team’s kick-off specialist.

The ball is held for them by a teammate, a role that is usually performed by the punter. Colquitt is willing to serve as Kane’s holder when he’s ready for that step.

He added: “The guy holding those field goals, that’s extremely important – knowing where the laces [on the ball] are, if you have wind. So when he’s ready, I’m ready.”

Several football players have previously converted to American football, but as yet no Englishman has managed to make it to the NFL after doing so.

However, both Clive Allen and Phil Alexander made the switch to play for London Monarchs in the 1990s.

The franchise competed in the World League of American Football and NFL Europe between 1991 and 1998.

Still, Kane is confident that his penalty kicking expertise sets him up for success when it comes to kicking field goals.

He told The Overlap in 2021: “A lot of people can score penalties in training or kick the ball far, but can you do that under pressure when the moment is right, when the game is on the line?

That aspect is the part where I might have a bit of an advantage over some younger people coming up.”

Throughout his professional career, Kane has scored 96 of the 108 penalties he has taken, excluding penalty shootouts.

Meanwhile, he has only missed once from 12 meters in a competitive match since the 2022 World Cup.

The England national team’s all-time leading scorer is currently in sensational form this season.
