For many, Christmas Day is a day of mental rest, a long trip on skis and otherwise a resting heart rate. Those who have a partner who has to catch absolutely everything from the Premier League, know that Boxing Day means something completely different. This is perhaps the biggest and most important matchday in the world’s toughest league. Don’t expect any ride or resting heart rate, here there is action on screen throughout the day. Now this tradition is threatened with being shut down.

“Boxing Day” is a tradition in the Premier League and in England. For many years, supporters have left their homes and Christmas celebrations to go to a fastball match when there have often been full rounds in the English leagues. This year, however, a big change is expected, reports the Daily Mail.

According to the English newspaper, it looks like there will only be one Premier League game, on Friday 26 December this year. The reason is stated to be that the Premier League is under pressure in terms of schedules when it comes to UEFA competitions, while there is a requirement for a certain number of matches on weekends.

And the reaction among the supporters? The English newspaper predicts this will create a high temperature among supporters all over England. Last year, people could sit down in the stadium, in the pub, or in front of the TV at home with as many as 8 Premier League matches played on “Boxing Day”.
