The season finale and the Billie Jean King Cup are behind us. This year, the Billie Jean Cup took place without Iga Swiatek, and Poland did not advance through the group stage of the event finals. Some people criticized Swiatek for resigning from representing Poland in the cup. Agnieszka Radwanska, the former number two tennis player in the world, also spoke on the matter. Iga Swiatek reacted to Radwanska’s words.
The WTA Finals ended on November 7, and the Billie Jean King Cup Finals began the next day. Swiatek, ranked number one in the world, decided not to represent Poland in the Billie Jean King Cup finals in Glasgow due to a scheduling clash.
Polish tennis legend Agnieszka Radwanska said that there are matches and tournaments in which Swiatek will simply have to play. One of such moments is the Billie Jean King Cup, one of the few situations when a tennis player can take part in a team competition and represent her country as a group. Radwanska added that Swiatek’s presence in the team at such an event will have a very positive impact on the Polish team. However, Swiatek did not appear. How did Swiatek react to Radwanska’s opinion?
“I treated this statement calmly. Some words are taken out of context, I have experienced this myself several times. Agnieszka knows how to function on a tour, what the burdens are, she knows this perspective.
He knows that sometimes you have to make a more selfish decision that will later help you avoid problems that will affect everyone. Agnieszka expressed her opinion in the context that she herself had sacrificed many times for the national team.
A similar attitude must certainly be appreciated. However, I have the impression that in the past all this was not analyzed so carefully and some things were easier to plan. There was no discussion that, for example, the next tournament would be played on another continent,” Swiatek told SportoweFakty.
