Pep Guardiola had enormous respect for Jürgen Klopp. At the same time, the two coaches were the biggest rivals in the Premier League for a long time. We don’t know if it was a coincidence, with the season after Klopp disappeared from Liverpool, Manchester City’s great fall occurred at the same time. Anyway, now Guardiola and City are back on the offensive for the coming season, this means that a not-so-clean little piece of Liverpool and Klopp will be part of Guardiola’s team.

Pep Lijnders was brought to Liverpool by Brendan Rodgers in 2014, continued with Klopp, tested himself for six months as head coach of the Dutch Eerste Divisie, then returned to Liverpool and as Klopp’s wingman until 2024. Now the Dutchman will help Manchester City.

On Tuesday, Manchester City confirmed they have hired Pepijn Lijnders and James French to strengthen the coaching staff around Guardiola. French comes directly from Liverpool, where he has worked as an analyst since 2012.

This means that Guardiola has acquired expertise that is directly built up under Jürgen Klopp. Pretty special.
