You know the story. Manchester United worked for a year and a half to sign Jadon Sancho, England’s biggest attacking talent at the time. The extreme success in the Borussia Dortmund shirt since he was a teenager had convinced the United management they had to stretch to 85 million euros and the furthest to secure the winger. This week, United boss Ratcliffe described Sancho as a mistake that United still have to pay for. Now it turns out that it is actually not over.
“Take Sancho, who plays for Chelsea, as an example. We’re paying half the salary and we’re paying £17 million to sell him this summer. It will take time for us to move on from the past and into where we want to be in the future,” Ratcliffe told Neville on The Overlap this week.
This looked like a done deal as Chelsea negotiated a season-long lease and a £20 million purchase clause. Many thought this was about an obligation to buy, but according to the Daily Mail, the clause opens up for Chelsea to buy their way out. A penalty fee is assumed, but certainly well away from the £20 million amount for signing.
Jadon Sancho is also said to have secured himself. According to the English media, it is common for the player and the new club to agree on personal terms further when the lease with a purchase option is signed, Sancho and Chelsea have not agreed in advance.
The lease expires on June 30, after which Jadon Sancho still has one year left on his contract with Manchester United and £250,000 in weekly wages.
After Sancho’s first 9 Premier League games in the Chelsea shirt, there was a lot of fuss with 3 assists and 2 goals, the last 13 league games there has been 1 poor assist from the 24-year-old.
This is far from settled, Ratcliffe.
