With the 7th weakest defensive record in the Premier League and Leoni out for the rest of the season with a cruciate ligament injury, Jamie Carragher sees no other option for Liverpool than to go for the winter transfer window, even after the £446m deal this summer.

The Reds brought in seven players, including Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz, but are eight points clear of the Premier League top spot after their 3-0 loss to Manchester City before the international break.

-Liverpool have to spend money in January, they have to buy a centre-back. They should have bought a centre-back this summer,” the Liverpool legend tells Sky Sports.

-They didn’t. One centre-back they bought, Leoni, a young Italian player, looked fantastic in the League Cup match he played. Unfortunately, he got a cruciate ligament injury, so we won’t see him until next season. Liverpool are probably one injury away from really derailing this season, so they have to go to the market in January,” Carragher said.

Arne Slot and the gang are of course aware of the situation. According to Sky Sports, there will be a push in January for the signing of one of the market’s most sought-after centre-backs.
