In the Netherlands, speculation machines are running hot: Could Ajax be ready to part ways with Kasper Dolberg in the summer? The Dane delivers a season far below expectations. – Just like Ajax, which we can now rightly call an ex-big club.
Four years without the gold
For four years in a row, Ajax have had to see themselves beaten in the battle for the Dutch championship title. There will be no gold this season either. With six rounds left in the series, the big team is a staggering 20 points behind league leader PSV Eindhoven.

The striker problems that are growing
One of the biggest explanations for the drop in form? The strikers score far too little. Together, Wout Weghorst and Kasper Dolberg have only netted nine times in the league this year.
It attracts extra attention because many jubilantly welcomed Dolberg this summer. He came in a sparkling transition from Anderlecht, where he showed an almost unstoppable goalscoring flair. But since then, injuries and fluctuating performances have affected the Dane – and that can have consequences.
“They may end up selling him”
“Whether they will continue with Dolberg, I don’t know. They might even end up selling him,” says Mike Verweij, the club’s regular connoisseur at De Telegraaf, in the podcast Kick-off.
The statements have already made big headlines in the Netherlands and Denmark.
Will bring in an “older” striker
The fact is that Dolberg has only scored three league goals and started fewer than every other game for Ajax this season. All indications are that either he or Weghorst will have to give way.
“They want an older, experienced striker, with a younger player as a reserve. I think they will focus on double coverage in all positions again – and bring in experience,” Verweij interprets.
Dolberg has a contract with Ajax until the summer of 2029. The question is whether he will be allowed to complete it.
