Michael Carrick won the battle to lead Man Utd for the rest of the season. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was for a long time the favourite to step in as he did during some very hectic December days in 2018, when Jose Mourinho was sent out of the gate at Old Trafford, but the Norwegian’s former assistant coach convinced the United management that he was the right man for the five-month period. Although many United supporters would like to have Solskjaer back at the helm, Michael Carrick has a high star at the club. Of course, Byderby’s win against City in the first leg strengthened this position. And if things are to go beyond the rest of the season, Carrick knows that Solskjaer is only a “phone call away”.

Now there is no Solskjaer return in the cards, but we love the unity between two competitors for the United job. We remember with horror when Ruben Amorim entered the stage, where substitute Ruud van Nistelrooy, who offered his services regardless of role, was “sent out the back door” before Amorim arrived at Carrington in November.

At the press conference before the Arsenal game, Carrick was also asked about Solskjaer. The answer warms and soothes another Man Utd heart.

“He’s a fantastic guy, and I have enormous respect for him. He wished us all the best and was happy that we got the right result (against City)… I know he’s there if I ever need him, but I’m not one to nag people,” Carrick said.
