Roberto de Zerbi took over the reins at Brighton from Graham Potter in 2022. Brighton supporters didn’t think it would be possible to match Potter’s success. De Zerbi lifted Brighton even higher. It went so far that Jürgen Klopp said he could hardly believe it was possible to perform at this level, after the big clubs had drained Brighton of the best players. De Zerbi was heavily linked with the biggest coaching jobs on the market in 2024, but opted for Marseille and Ligue 1. There has been partial success here – right up until the club crashed out of the Champions League (and lost 0-5 to PSG). On Wednesday night, De Zerbi became available on the market.
In a press release posted in the middle of the night, Marseille reports that the club and De Zebi are ending the contract after mutual agreement, as it is so beautifully called, “a difficult decision for all parties”.
