Some football rivalries are built on pure hatred. Liverpool and Leeds United have a relationship that is far more complex than that. It has swung from utter hostility to remarkable acts of respect. However, it would be remarkable if the gang from Elland Road managed to sign a Liverpool player before the start of the season.

Liverpool winger Ben Doak was on loan to Middlesbrough last season with 24 appearances, 3 goals and 7 assists. Now it is expected that the 19-year-old is ready for first-team football. According to The Athletic, Liverpool rejected bids of £20 million in January and are said to be more than happy to keep the Scot as an option in the Liverpool squad. The Leeds management and Daniel Farke believe he is ready for more.

The English media reports Leeds have now discussed a Doak signing, with “sources close to the player and Liverpool” reporting Daniel Farke and Leeds have shown great interest in the Scotland international with playing time in 10 games for the Reds.

West Ham, Monaco and Bologna have also signalled their interest. It remains to be seen whether it is Leeds who inflate the necessary amount and secure what would have previously been seen as a completely unlikely transfer from Liverpool.

With Doak’s contract expiring in 2026, something may be in the works.
