Ex Molde centre-back and national team player Leo Skiri Østigård was sold to the French club Rennes from Napoli this summer for 8 million euros. – Danish Albert Grønbæk also came in in a transfer worth 15 million euros from Bodø/Glimt.

You would think it would lift the club, but Rennes, despite a large budget by French standards, are far down the Ligue 1 table.

Not particularly surprising that Julien Stéphan has been sacked, what is more surprising is who they bring in as a replacement.

Stéphan has been Rennes boss for two different periods. First, he managed the club from December 2018 to March 2021. After a year and a half stay in Strasbourg, Stéphan returned to Rennes in November last year.

According to L’Équipe, the Rennes management is already in dialogue with Jorge Sampaoli, who has been in the job since September 2023 when he left Flamengo.

The Argentine coach has not since 2016 held more than one season in the 6 clubs (plus 1 national team) he has worked for since. It was especially the Sevilla stay 2022-23 that we remember with Sampaoli. Then the Dane Kasper Dolberg was sent out into the cold after being labeled as an introvert by the warm-blooded Argentine.

Good luck!
