Should Lionell Messi choose to return to Europe, it will clearly create big waves in the football world.

Eight-time Ballon d’Or winner Messi has scored 18 goals and provided 10 assists in MLS this season for Inter Miami, and is said to be in talks to extend his contract in Florida.

The 38-year-old’s current deal expires in December, but Inter Miami president Jorge Mas told ESPN last month that the club will do everything in their power to ensure Messi stays on for the rest of the year.

Nevertheless, Como coach Cesc Fabregas has stated this week that he does not rule out the possibility that Messi could one day sign for the Italian club.

Messi’s wife, Antonela Roccuzzo, was spotted with the couple’s three children when they watched a friendly between Como and Lille last week, which has led to speculation that the Inter Miami captain could consider a game in Italy.

When Fabregas was asked if Messi could play for Como in the future, he told reporters on Tuesday: “Never say never.”

“She [Antonela] was here with me on vacation for a week with us because Leo [Messi] was going to be away for a week to play in Cincinnati and New York.”

“They [Messi family] took the opportunity to take a trip and visit friends. We are very close friends, our wives are very good friends, and our children are about the same age.”

“After the [Lille] game, I said to [Como sporting director] ‘Charly’ Ludi that we can never say Messi hasn’t played for Como, because his kids played here, and that’s always beautiful because of the history we have.”

“But no, he [Messi] is very fond of America, so let’s be calm.”

Fabregas and Messi were teammates at Barcelona, and their families are known to be close.

Fabregas, who led Como to a 10th place finish in Serie A last year, is under contract with the Lombard club until June 2028.

What now?
While Fabregas’ comments should probably be taken with a pinch of salt, speculation about a possible move to Europe has sparked debate among football fans around the world. Messi himself has not commented on the rumours, but with his contract in Miami coming to an end, it will not be surprising if more clubs try to lure him back to Europe.

Como, who plays in Serie A, could be an interesting destination for Messi – especially with Fabregas as coach and their close friendship. But Inter Miami is unlikely to let go of their biggest star without a game.

One thing is for sure: the football world will keep its eyes open for more developments in this matter!
