Liverpool manager Arne Slot is about to secure his first summer signing, with a deal to sign Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen according to reports.

Alexander-Arnold’s departure opens the door

Liverpool were shaken by the news that Trent Alexander-Arnold will leave the club when his contract expires in June. The England right-back is reportedly set to sign for Real Madrid on a free transfer – a high-profile move à la Kylian Mbappé to the Bernabéu last year.

Trent Alexander-Arnold leaves a huge void at Liverpool, and it could well be Jeremie Frimpong who will be tasked with filling it. For a long time, the Premier League winners have been linked with the 24-year-old Dutchman from Leverkusen, and now a verbal agreement is said to be imminent.

Slot has not waited to find a replacement, and is now ready to break his personal transfer record to secure Frimpong from Leverkusen. (That record will be broken several times)

The deal is approaching

German media reports that a deal worth around €35 million is close to becoming a reality.

Sky Sport Deutschland’s Florian Plettenberg confirms:
“Jeremie Frimpong and Liverpool are on the verge of a verbal agreement. The negotiations are progressing, but some details remain. Frimpong is ready for the transition – not least because Arne Slot really wants him. It looks promising, but the deal is not done yet. The buy-out clause is approximately €35-40 million.”

Fabrizio Romano backs up the information:
“The negotiations between Liverpool and Frimpong’s representatives have picked up speed again today. The player has always been interested, and Liverpool are working on wages, contract time and all the details of the deal. The transition is approaching.”

Frimpong’s profile

Like Alexander-Arnold, Frimpong is an offensively oriented right-back, but has mainly played as a wing-back at Leverkusen this season.

His statistics show:

  • 48 games in all competitions
  • 5 goals and 12 assists this season
  • Estimated market value (ETV): €55 million – significantly higher than the transfer fee Liverpool pay
