Liverpool have been busy in the transfer window.

According to reports, Liverpool are in the process of securing a player who was also on Manchester United’s radar. This summer, the English champions have already spent large amounts of money on players such as Jeremie Frimpong, Florian Wirtz and Milos Kerkez.

In addition, names such as Marc Guehi, Hugo Ekitike, Viktor Gyökeres and Alexander Isak have been linked with a move to Anfield.

But on Friday night, there was a surprising new twist: Liverpool are now very close to a new signing.

Liverpool in the process of signing a free goalkeeper

As reported by The Times journalist Paul Joyce on social media:
“Liverpool are close to signing goalkeeper Freddie Woodman on a free transfer from Preston North End. He will be cover for Alisson and Giorgi Mamardashvili, as Fabian Jaros and Harvey Davies are loaned out to Ajax and Crawley Town respectively next season.”

Joyce added:
“Woodman meets the criteria for an ‘Association Trained’ player and will not take up one of Liverpool’s 17 non-homegrown places on the UEFA list.”

Was on United’s radar

Before the move to Liverpool came up, Woodman was reportedly also being watched by Manchester United.

Sky Sports previously reported that United wanted Woodman as their third choice in goal, but they ultimately opted to extend with Tom Heaton.

Their report said:
“Manchester United’s search for a ‘homegrown’ backup goalkeeper has led them to a former Under-20 World Cup hero for England. They have been keeping a watchful eye on Preston North End’s Freddie Woodman.”

“The 28-year-old will be one of the best free goalkeepers this summer after keeping 13 clean sheets in 37 Championship games this season.”

Heaton extends with United

United confirmed on Friday that Heaton has signed a new one-year deal.

A statement from the club read:
“Tom Heaton has signed a new one-year deal with Manchester United. Academy-developed Heaton is now entering his 20th year as a professional player, having played for Swindon Town on loan from United in 2005.
