Liverpool announce striker signing after hijacking Arsenal transfer – while Alexander Isak development is ongoing

Liverpool have confirmed the signing of the very promising 17-year-old striker talent Will Wright, after snatching him right under Arsenal’s nose.

Wright looked to be on his way to the Emirates Stadium for a long time after Arsenal agreed a transfer fee of £200,000 plus bonuses with Salford City. But the London club was unable to agree with the player on personal terms.

As a result, Liverpool seized the chance and hijacked their rival’s transfer deal for the young talent. They agreed with Salford on a sum and also made a deal with the player himself.

According to reports, Wright wanted to remain in the northwest of England rather than move to the capital. Liverpool have now officially announced the signing of the 17-year-old, who will continue his development in the club’s academy.

“Liverpool FC have completed the signing of Will Wright from Salford City,” read a club announcement. “He joined Rob Page’s U21 squad last week and made his debut on Saturday with a 30-minute substitute in the 0-0 draw against Hull City at the academy.”

Wright made four senior appearances for Salford in the 2024/25 season, including a brief appearance in the team’s 8–0 defeat to Manchester City in the FA Cup third round.

Liverpool sign Wright – will Alexander Isak be next?
Liverpool believe they have signed a player who could develop into one of England’s greatest striker talents – perhaps even reaching Alexander Isak’s level.

The potentially record-breaking transfer for the Newcastle player is currently dominating the transfer window, although Newcastle turned down an initial bid of £110 million from the English champions.

A second bid from Liverpool is not thought to be as imminent, but they have not given up hope on the Swedish international, who is now back in training after skipping Newcastle’s Asia tour due to transfer speculation.

While Liverpool are planning their next move, Newcastle are looking for replacements for Isak. They have reportedly resumed interest in a 33-goal striker after failing a bid for RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Šeško.

If Newcastle are successful in signing a new expensive striker, the door could be opened for Isak to go to Anfield – but only if Liverpool are willing to pay at least £120 million, and potentially upwards of £150 million.

The former Real Sociedad player is then likely to replace Darwin Núñez in Liverpool’s attack. According to reports, one of the big clubs in the Saudi Pro League has increased their interest in the Uruguayan striker.
