Tottenham Hotspur’s attempt to sign Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson has now been called off, after the Reds pulled the plug on a transfer.

Robertson’s contract expires in the summer, which means Liverpool have a decision to make about his future. With no new contract on the horizon, Liverpool could either cash in on him now for a transfer fee, or lose him for free later in the year.

Robertson has mainly played in the shadow of Milos Kerkez this season, after the Hungarian left-back came through the door from Bournemouth in the summer. With Tottenham on the hunt for a left-back following an injury to Ben Davies, the north London club decided to try and sign Robertson, but things have gone wrong.

Liverpool stop Robertson from completing the transfer.

According to The Times reporter Paul Joyce, Liverpool have now stopped Tottenham’s attempts to sign Robertson. The Scotland international now looks set to remain at Anfield, after Liverpool informed Spurs that they could not consider his departure as things stand, due to the current options they have in his position.

Tottenham are said to have been willing to pay a sum of around £5 million, but a deal for them to secure his signature has now been called off. The Merseyside club hoped to recall Kostas Tsimikas from his loan spell at Roma, but it is claimed that the Serie A club were reluctant to cancel his temporary stay.

During Liverpool’s defeat to Bournemouth in last weekend’s Premier League game, Joe Gomez was substituted due to injury, which may have forced their hand in terms of a departure for Robertson, as they lost yet another defender option.

Robertson may not be happy.

If Robertson is going to continue to play a backup role for Kerkez in Arne Slot’s team, he may not be too happy that a deal has fallen through. Luckily for him, his contract expires in the summer, which means he can move freely.

Slot has preferred Kerkez on the left side of the defence, and it is hardly surprising if they knew that Robertson would leave the club at the end of the season. Whether a departure will happen later in the January transfer window remains to be seen, but for now, Liverpool have stopped his move to Spurs.
