Arne Slot has learned that when there are signs of the slightest adversity, the questions that are meant to put you off come at the press conferences. Last season, there was a joking tone before and after Premier League games, in 6th place with 12 games left in the season, the journalists smell a potential exit on the Dutchman. Then statements from former high rollers are brought up to see if Slot goes on any answers that make headlines.
Arne Slot “jumped after” Jürgen Klopp last season – and jumped further. Klopp left Liverpool with a Premier League title, but all the way back in the 19/20 season. The last two seasons finished in fifth and third place. Slot debuted with a title. Then came the demanding second season, where expectations for Slot had skyrocketed. How does the Dutchman deal with adversity? Wayne Rooney has plenty of free time after he was sacked as manager at Plymouth Argyle, the United legend now spends his time analysing others. Arne Slot lacks the essentials,” Rooney said earlier in the week.

“I’ve met him a couple of times, but I just don’t think he has that aura (charisma, charisma) for Liverpool, and maybe it’s because Liverpool have just come after Jürgen Klopp as manager. It’s hard for anyone to do that, but I just don’t think there’s thataura around him,” Rooney said on The Overlap Fan Debate.
On Saturday, Slot was asked about this statement. Jürgen Klopp had just looked hard at the journalist and said something like “can’t remember Rooney being the sharpest coaching knife in the drawer”. Slot chooses to provide a complementary answer.
“It’s okay to compare people, but is it reasonable to do so?” We are all different. The only thing Jürgen and I have in common is that we have both won the Premier League once. And that’s not too bad, is it?, begins Slot
“I think the more a manager wins, the more respect he gets. That’s how it usually is,” he says and continues: “I don’t know if you agree with Wayne Rooney, but if that was the general attitude, people might say I had more charisma last season than in this one. But maybe he (Rooney) is the only one who thinks so. I don’t know. You have to tell me. It’s the first time I’ve heard that,” says Arne Slot.
