Things have not gone smoothly for Federico Chiesas after his move from Juventus to Liverpool in the summer of 2024.

Manager Arne Slot has consistently in his first season as Liverpool manager chosen players other than Chiesa’s who have only been given 25 minutes in the Premier League. – It is hard to argue that Slot should have made a different choice as they are about to win the league. – Chiesa has in his 11 games (most cup games) registered two goals and two assists. Slot tends to turn to the likes of Darwin Nunez and Harvey Elliott if he needs someone off the bench.

The Dutchman recently gave the reason why some of his players are barely featured.

“It’s harder [to put players in, of course] because these players are hardly training with starters if you look at our schedule for the last three or four months,” Slot said at a press conference earlier this month.

“So if we play, for example, on Saturday and then play on Tuesday again, then on Sunday, those who played on Saturday just do a recovery session, so they’re not on the pitch.

“And then it’s the day before the game and it’s maybe 10, 15 minutes of tactics, where it’s more walking football than playing football. So there is almost never a moment when they can compete with each other.

“But the day after the game I’m always outside, my assistants have good drills and the players always show themselves in those moments.

“So there are moments to show where you are. If you’ve improved, yes or no, and whether you’re getting closer to the players who are starting – and of course when they come in [from the bench].”

So, where does Chiesa’s future lie?

Football Italia reports that Liverpool have “decided to part ways” with the 27-year-old.

Antonio Conte’s title-chasing Napoli side are claimed to be “keen” on the winger, while the former Chelsea boss sees him as a potentially “valuable addition” to his squad.

The outlet also reported that Italy head coach Luciano Spalletti would welcome Chiesa back to Serie A, as he “believes” that he can become a crucial figure in Italy’s squad in preparation for the 2026 World Cup.
