Liverpool go into the summer break as Premier League champions. That means all the Premier League rivals are going to knock the club off the throne. It also means that what Liverpool have delivered this season probably won’t be enough next season. Reinforcement at the top is therefore a priority at Liverpool. For us, however, it is strange that the champions club have set their sights on the striker who has had anything but success in the Premier League.

There was a lot of excitement from Chelsea owner Todd Boehlly as he had manoeuvred his way to an early signing of the player who would give Chelsea the necessary 20-30 goals at the top. Christopher Nkunku was brought in from RB Leipzig for €60 million, but the French striker has been a big disappointment for the supporters. Severely hampered by injuries since his move to Stamford Bridge in 2023, the 27-year-old stands with just 56 appearances and 17 goals.

At Enzo Maresca there is no room for Nkunku, in recent months the Frenchman has been heavily linked with exit. Now to the weird. According to Foot Mercato, Liverpool are in talks with Nkunku’s representatives.

The 27-year-old’s strengths are that he plays as naturally as a No. 10, as a winger and striker. These are qualities similar to Cody Gakpo, something Arne Slot wants more of.

Nkunku should have it, when he has been injury-free and fit, he has shown flashes of greatness. With 14 goals this season, he is Chelsea’s second-highest scoring player, but with only three of those goals coming in the Premier League, we can’t believe Liverpool should go for Nnkunku.

There has been plenty of lack of continuity with Darwin Nunez, there is no reason why Liverpool should take the risk involved in bringing in a player with Nkunku’s history in the Premier League.
