When a club sets up for titles and plays in the Champions League, there are of course consequences if the big income is not forthcoming. Liverpool are surging forward under Arne Slot this season, and everything is joy. However, it comes as a small shudder when the results for the 2023/24 season are presented on Friday.

It cost £600 million to run the club, reports The Times. Almost two-thirds went to wage bills, including Jürgen Klopp’s generous severance package. Klopp himself chose to retire before the end of his contract, Liverpool gave the legendary coach and his team £9.6 million on their way out of the gate.

Now to the total accounts. Without a Champions League ticket, it ended up with a deficit of a solid £57 million.

-Despite the increase in revenue, administrative costs rose significantly to £600 million, mainly due to salaries and operating costs throughout the club. However, this supported the growth in commercial revenues as well as the increased number of matchdays compared to the previous period,” Liverpool writes on the club’s website.

Arne Slot’s jubilee season so far probably gives the CFO some less sleepless nights.
