Alonso demands three expensive signings
Xabi Alonso has told Liverpool that he wants to replace Arne Slot as manager in the summer. But he demands that three players be brought in before he accepts the job – and the club must do everything they can to make it happen.

The Reds broke transfer records last summer to strengthen Slot’s squad after the team became league champions in the Premier League. But this season it has been heavier. Liverpool are currently in fifth place in the table, and are on the verge of crashing out of the Champions League after a 1-0 loss away to Galatasaray in the first leg of the last eight last week.
The results, combined with the players’ performances throughout the season, have made the supporters turn their backs on the Dutchman. Speculation is now running high that he could be sacked in the summer, and according to reports, the owners of FSG see Alonso as the perfect candidate to take over.
Liverpool must give Alonso what he wants
It is clear that Slot has lost the trust of the club’s fans, and the beeping concert after the draw against Tottenham spoke for itself. Alonso is also a club legend, having represented the club for a number of years and helped win the Champions League as a player.
He is also the name most people mention as the natural successor, after the formidable job he did at Bayer Leverkusen. Since then, he has taken over Real Madrid, and experienced the same thing as many other world-class coaches before him – that it hasn’t quite clicked.
A return to Anfield would not only lift the mood and morale of the club, it would also mean that they get a top coach who knows the culture and is ready to take the club to the next level – something Slot does not currently seem to be able to do.
According to a report, Alonso has demanded three new players if he is to take over – three signings that would please any supporter.
A new centre-back is needed, although Jeremy Jacquet has already been brought in and Ibrahima Konate could extend his contract. Alessandro Bastoni is at the top of many people’s wish lists – and he is also Alonso’s priority. Adam Wharton is wanted to strengthen the midfield, and it is well known that the club is following him closely. In addition, Bradley Barcola, one of the world’s best wingers, is wanted as an ideal replacement for Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah.
Alonso needs time and tools
The club must do everything they can to bring in players of that calibre. If they want Alonso to come in and turn the ship around, they have to give him both the time and the means to make it happen.
Bringing in the players he has asked for raises the level of the squad – and even if it does not succeed under the Spaniard, the next manager will still be left with a strong team.
If you want to be the best, you have to beat the best. Liverpool can show real ambition by bringing in these players and giving Alonso the job for next season – to get the club back to where they think they belong.
