Magnus Wolff Eikrem, who spent three years in Manchester United’s youth department before returning to his childhood club Molde, is a true Molde legend. – It has been 11th year as number 7 in two rounds. – The last one started in 2018.
There have been talks about an extension of the agreement that expires this year, but they were unable to reach an agreement.
“Magnus is a real Molde boy who has written his name in gold letters in the club’s history,” says sports director Ole Jakob Strandhagen in a press release.
Molde icon Magnus Wolff Eikrem, 35 years old, leaves the club after 355 appearances, spread over two stays, and seven titles. On Wednesday, the Norwegian big club announces that the parties have agreed to part ways after talking for a long time about the way forward.
Molde claims that the club wanted to keep Wolff Eikrem, but “in a changed role adapted to the club’s strategy for the future.”
“We have had good, long and honest conversations with Magnus. Our offer involved an extension of his playing career combined with a gradual transition to a coaching and development role within our sporting apparatus. We wanted to take advantage of his unique football sense, vision and experience also off the pitch to build the future,” says sports director Ole Jakob Strandhagen on Molde’s website.
According to Molde, Wolff Eikrem, on the other hand, has been clear that he still wants to focus one hundred percent on being a top player. Wolff Eikrem is not claimed to want reduced playing time to focus on other tasks in the current situation.

“We have great respect for that. Although we would have liked to have seen him join us on our journey in a new role already now, we part as friends with deep mutual respect for what we have achieved together,” says Strandhagen.
He continues:
“Magnus is a real Molde boy who has written his name in gold letters in the club’s history. He has been a fantastic ambassador for both the club and the region for a number of years and is living proof of what hard work, dedication and local belonging can lead to.”
Wolff Eikrem does not comment in Molde’s press release. The Norwegian also has a background playing for Manchester United, Heerenveen, Cardiff, Malmö FF and Seattle. With MFF, there were 16 goals and 34 assists in 85 games, as well as two Swedish Championship gold medals in 2016 and 2017.
