Former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has made a brutal prediction about his former club while giving his honest opinion on Ruben Amorim.
Ferguson, who was manager of Manchester United between 1986 and 2013, is the Red Devils’ greatest manager of all time, leading the team to 38 major trophies, including two UEFA Champions League titles and 13 Premier League titles.
However, since his departure, United have failed to win a single league title, while arch-rivals Liverpool equalled their record of 20 triumphs as the Merseyside club won the 2024/25 title under Arne Slot.
Manchester United have only finished second twice – under José Mourinho in 2017/18 and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in 2020/21 – since Ferguson left the club, and all six permanent managers – David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Mourinho, Solskjaer, Erik ten Hag and, so far, Amorim – have failed to return the club to its former glory.

Currently, Amorim is set to lead United, but he was unable to prevent the team from finishing in a record-low 15th place in the Premier League last season, as well as losing the Europa League final.
After 16 games in the 2025/26 season, United are in sixth place with a record of seven wins, five draws and four losses.
While finishing in this position would be an improvement from last season, finishing sixth is still seen as a disappointment for those associated with the club.
Many former players, including Paul Scholes, have questioned Amorim’s position, but what does Ferguson think of the Portuguese?
The Scot recently gave his thoughts in an interview with Press Box PR and compared Amorim’s first time at Old Trafford to his own.
“He [Amorim] has a good personality,” Ferguson said.
“It’s not easy. I remember back to my own time there, the start when Liverpool were at the very top. They were a fantastic club, winning the European Cup four times and all that, but then it took them 31 years to win the league again.”
The 83-year-old then hinted that United may have to wait another decade before they get a taste of true success again.
“We are now in the same situation [as Liverpool in the 1990s],” he added.
“It could take ten years, it could take eleven years, because of that cycle. It must be carefully thought through, and we must ensure that recruitment is better than it has been.”
Ferguson then spoke about the club’s newest recruit, goalkeeper Senne Lammens, describing the Belgian as someone who has “made a difference” to the team, while also praising Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha as players who “look like they will help us find our form again”.
United are back in action away at Villa Park against Aston Villa on December 21.
