A week after convincingly winning the Carabao Cup against Arsenal, Manchester City’s season is hanging by a thread.
Although unlikely, Manchester City can still win a domestic treble, with a tempting FA Cup quarter-final against Liverpool after the international break. They are also nine points behind Arsenal, with eight games left to play, and have one game less played than “The Gunners”.
Despite the fact that there are still two trophies to play for this season, the club is planning for next season.
Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson and Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali top Manchester City’s wish list, with a likely total price of around £190 million. However, it is unlikely that the former English champions will pay such a high sum for both players.
But there may still be a solution.
According to GOAL, City are considering a swap involving a total of six players, with the Manchester club also interested in full-back Tino Livramento.
To seal the deals, reports suggest that City could offer four players – goalkeeper James Trafford, full-backs Rico Lewis and Issa Kaboré, and centre-back Jumah Bah.
Tonali has also been linked with a potential move to City’s rivals Manchester United, but his next move could be influenced by whether the Red Devils secure Champions League football this season. The Italian is said to have a verbal agreement to leave if Newcastle do not qualify for Europe’s premier club competition.
Earlier this month, Tonali’s agent suggested in an interview with Calcio e Finanza that his client prefers a move to City or Arsenal to United.
When pressed on whether Tonali can sign for Manchester City or Arsenal, Giuseppe Riso explained: “Exactly, that was the goal from the moment he went to England – to try and make him a star player. I think he is the Italian footballer with one of the highest values in the world.”
The 25-year-old is currently Newcastle’s fourth highest-paid player with £150,000 a week, equivalent to £7.8 million a year, according to Capology.
