Manchester City are about to sign Chelsea’s third choice in goal, Marcus Bettinelli.
Swapped after Scott Carson’s departure
City bosses are on the hunt for a new backup goalkeeper after it became known that Scott Carson will leave the club when his contract expires.
The 39-year-old Carson, a former Liverpool and Aston Villa player, served as City’s third choice in goal since 2021, but only played two senior games – most recently against Sporting CP in 2022.

Bettinelli on his way to the Etihad
Following Carson’s departure, City have quickly found a replacement in the forgotten Chelsea goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli. The Telegraph confirms that the former Fulham goalkeeper will soon move to the Etihad.
Key details about the transition:
- The deal is “almost ready” according to Romano
- Transfer fee not revealed (Bettinelli has contract until 2026)
- Wants to help City meet homegrown player quota
Chelsea’s goalkeeping chaos
Chelsea also announced the departure of three young goalkeepers (Bergstrom, Beach, Campbell), while they themselves are chasing AC Milan’s Mike Maignan.
If Maignan is signed, Chelsea will have as many as seven senior goalkeepers on their payroll – even after Bettinelli’s departure:
- Mike Maignan (in negotiations)
- Robert Sanchez
- Filip Jørgensen
- Gabriel Slonina
- Djordje Petrovic
- Mike Penders
- Kepa Arrizabalaga (expected to sign for Arsenal)
Bettinelli’s career in brief
- 33 years old
- Only one senior game for Chelsea (FA Cup 2022)
- Previous England squads (2018)
- Important role as an experienced wardrobe figure
The transfer marks City’s quick handling of the goalkeeping squad, while Chelsea are facing a complete upheaval in the goalkeeping department.
