There is no shortage of players who want to sign for Real Madrid, nor of agents who are desperate to get their clients to the Santiago Bernabéu. This results in Los Blancos receiving many offers from willing footballers – although it is rarely from their biggest competitors for the biggest trophies.
But now this is precisely the case with Manuel Akanji. The Swiss defender has competed against Real Madrid in the Champions League in recent seasons, but according to Marca, Akanji has now offered himself as an option for the Spanish giants this summer. Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is planning a major squad change, and Akanji himself feels that it is time for a new challenge – which is why he is looking for a new club.

Nevertheless, Real Madrid have no intention of signing Akanji, according to the Madrid-based magazine. Los Blancos have struggled significantly with injuries in defence over the past two seasons, with Dani Carvajal, David Alaba and Éder Militão all suffering from serious knee injuries. The club also tried to sign centre-back Leny Yoro last summer, and it was only injuries that opened the door for Raúl Asencio this season.
However, Akanji does not fit into Real Madrid’s signing policy. Although he is an all-round player, he still has two years left on his contract and therefore will not be free. Real Madrid focus on only spending money on young talent, while bringing in experienced players on a free transfer. At 29 years old, Akanji definitely belongs to the latter category.
Real Madrid rather look towards Dean Huijsen
At the same time as Akanji’s offer surfaced, Real Madrid have also shown interest in Bournemouth defender Dean Huijsen. Several clubs are considering activating his €60 million withdrawal clause this summer, including Madrid. According to reports, they have already made initial contact with Huijsen and his representatives, and the player himself seems to be open to a change of club.
Although Akanji is a solid and experienced player, he doesn’t seem to be heading to Real Madrid. The club prefers to invest in younger talents or free transfers for experienced players. Instead, it could be a battle for Huijsen – a player who better suits Madrid’s long-term strategy.
