Manchester United beat Athletic Club 7-1 on aggregate over two games, while Spurs won 5-1 against Bodø/Glimt and secured an all-English final in Bilbao on Wednesday 21 May.
Although both teams have had difficult seasons at home, they will now fight to win Europe’s second biggest club competition and secure a place in next season’s Champions League.
It was recently confirmed that England will have at least five teams in the Champions League next season. The Premier League got an extra spot, one of two “European Performance Spots” (EPS), after Arsenal beat Real Madrid in the quarter-finals.
How many Premier League teams will play in next season’s Champions League?
The top four places have thus become five, but with both United and Spurs in the final, the Premier League will now have six teams in the Champions League next season – something that has never happened before.
As it stands, with three games to go, Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester City, Newcastle and Chelsea will all be in next season’s Champions League – along with either United or Spurs.
Sixth place, which is currently held by Nottingham Forest, earns a place in the Europa League.
But the result of the FA Cup final between Manchester City and Crystal Palace will also be decisive, as the winner also secures a Europa League spot. As ESPN points out, if Palace wins, they take the place, but if City win, the place will go to the team that finishes in seventh place.
Newcastle qualified for the Conference League through their Carabao Cup victory over Liverpool, but if both they and City finish in the top seven, the eighth-placed team (currently Bournemouth) will play in Europe’s third club competition next season.
Eight teams are guaranteed European play next season, but with Chelsea’s participation in the Conference League and other possible league positions, there could be as many as nine or ten teams if Chelsea win the final on May 28 but finish outside the European places.
Both United and Spurs will have the same amount of time to prepare for the final, as Ange Postecoglou’s side play Aston Villa on the same night as Chelsea face United on Friday 16 May.
The winner of the final will receive £10.95 million in prize money, while the losing finalist will receive £5.90 million.
