The transfer window closes on Monday, then calm settles down at the biggest clubs – for a few hours. For the job of positioning for signings in the main transfer window after the end of the season, it is already underway. Manchester United need to clarify the situation with who will lead the club next season, while at the same time aiming to sign what will be a key player in midfield. Here now stands an English 23-year-old as a clear top candidate.

Manchester United have been heavily linked with Carlos Baleba at Brighton over the past year, a move that was halted in the spring of 2025 when Brighton jacked up their price expectations above what United could and were willing to pay. Then there was the focus on Crystal Palace player Adam Wharton. However, there is another midfielder who has moved up to the top of the wish list. Now, The Athletic reports that United will be investing heavily in starting next season with Elliot Anderson in the squad.

Sky Sports reported back in October that United were interested in Anderson, according to The Athletic , United tried to arrange a transfer in January, but Forest refused to let Anderson leave in mid-season.

The Athletic tend to have a good flair for what goes on in the back room. Although the competition is fierce for Anderson signing that could reach upwards of £100 million, this smells of a Manchester United transfer. When the Red Devils on the offensive and a finger on the Champions League ticket flash Anderson out as a top candidate, then it will be the same as with Mbeumo and Cunha.
