Seven games left of the Premier League season. Michael Carrick has taken over the reins from Ruben Amorim from a decent start in January, to what looks like ending up with a Champions League ticket. Several United legends have demanded United now need to hire one of the real coaching guns, with Carrick becoming a lightweight. Still, the results the “lightweight” has delivered tell a completely different story about what coach United need. Now it is reported that no contact with other candidates has been made.

There have been reports since Amorim’s exit that the United management will let it take its time, as it is so nicely called, before the permanent Man Utd coach is chosen this summer. Sounds right, but we have yet to experience that the Man Utd owners and management sit with a resting pulse without rushing around and contacting candidates to lead the club. It is clearly a new situation now. With Carrick’s great success in the Premier League and his hand on a Champions League ticket for next season, the level of desperation has clearly descended.

When Erik ten Hag led United to the FA Cup title in 2024 and kept his job, there were a bunch of reports about United management’s meetings with candidates to take over the job. Thomas Tuchel is also said to have received the offer, but turned it down. This time, the United management actually has good reason to wait.

A logical choice is to continue with Carrick. In any case, it would not send any good signals to the interim coach, if the management in the last seven Premier League rounds is reported to be in contact with one, the other and the sixth candidate to take the job. If Jason Wilcox and the others in management are now sitting calmly until the end of the season, Carrick will “demonstrably” have full confidence in any appointment.

Now the focus is on the first game, then the next, then the next – and not the usual chaos where the United management is reported in continuous contact with coaching candidates (who decline).
