After Manchester United lost the Europa League final to Totteham a few weeks ago, first-choice goalkeeper André Onana suffered a special record.

The signals about the future of Manchester United’s first-choice goalkeeper are varying these days. Manager Ruben Amorim is said to have “demanded” to keep André Onana there while working in high gear to find a replacement.

After choosing not to extend David de Gea’s contract after the 2022/23 season, United paid €55 million to sign the Cameroonian international goalkeeper from Inter Milan – a signing that caused a stir. The reason was, of course, a shared past with then-manager Erik ten Hag at Ajax.

But two years later, many agree that Onana has failed in the United shirt, with several high-profile mistakes in recent seasons.

After United lost the Europa League final to Tottenham at the end of May, exit rumours have abounded.

Monaco shows interest – Carnesecchi on the radar

According to journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, Monaco have sent a first inquiry about Onana. If he leaves, United could go for Atalanta’s Marco Carnesecchi as a replacement.

Reports indicate that United have already made contact with the goalkeeper’s agent, but not the Italian club yet. According to Tuttomercatoweb, Atalanta values the 24-year-old at around 50 million euros.

The Italian club want to get as high a sum as possible for their academy player, especially since key players such as Ademola Lookman and Ederson could also be sold this summer.

Two very different seasons for Onana and Carnesecchi

From the start of the 2023/24 season, no goalkeeper at Premier League clubs had committed more mistakes that led to goals in all competitions than Onana (eight), according to statistics from April this year.

In addition, Onana set an unwanted record this season as the first player to reach three finals in Europe with three different clubs – without winning a single one:

  • Lost the Europa League final with Ajax to United in 2017.
  • Lost the Champions League final with Inter to Manchester City in 2023.
  • Lost the Europa League final with United against Tottenham in May 2025.

On the other hand, Carnesecchi (1.96m) has kept 18 clean sheets in 44 games and helped Atalanta qualify for the Champions League next season.

While Onana’s value is declining, Carnesecchis is rising – and the former Italian U21 international goalkeeper is now in demand. But whether he actually leaves Atalanta remains to be seen.
