On January 4, Ruben Amorim “begged” to be sacked in an interview after the Leeds game. Harsh criticism of the management and a “can’t be bothered to have the job beyond contract expiration” statement, also ensured that he was fired the next day. Manchester United have spent between £70 million and £100 million on sacking managers since Alex Ferguson’s exit, but around £10 million in compensation for Amorim and his staff stings in the financial situation the club finds itself in. According to an English journalist, United could have almost saved themselves this expense.
According to John Richardson of The Sun, “credible sources high up at the club” have told Amorim were ready to leave after a heated argument with director of football Jason Wilcox, an altercation that allegedly took place two days before United were due to face Leeds at Elland Road.

It is further claimed that Amorim told friends that he was going to resign, but was encouraged by his agent Raul Costa to stay.
Had Amorim followed his temper and “I don’t give a shit what others think” attitude, resigned before the Leeds game and left Manchester United, the club would probably have avoided compensation of around £10 million.
