A season without Champions League games means up to 25 percent lower wage bills for Manchester United. A very meagre consolation for the United owners, if Manchester United do not go to the Europa League final and win the title and automatic CL ticket.

The BBC has set up the calculation for what is at stake for Ruben Amorim and United when Athletic Bilbao are sent out of the Europa League and United are all the way to the prize table on final day.

A good CL season could be worth well over £100 million. When this is combined with ticket revenues, sponsorship bonuses and prize money, the sum is enormous.

-A club of United’s size can expect to earn at least 960 million kroner from CL participation even if they lose all eight of their games in the league phase.

– Old Trafford is England’s largest club stadium and provides significant matchday revenue. The Champions League offers a minimum of four and a maximum of eight home games, and for United it is a turnover of between 330 and 660 million kroner.

– A clause in the sponsorship agreement with Adidas means that United lose 137 million kroner if the club does not qualify for the Champions League.

-United can earn as much as 1.8 to 1.9 billion kroner if the team goes far in the knockout phase
