Benfica made a splash when they opened the door for Alvaro Carreras last summer. The left-back started at Real Madrid’s academy, went to Manchester United’s academy in 2020, but never made his debut in the senior team. At Benfica, the 22-year-old has really shown his potential, now he is called home to his old club.
Benfica signed Carreras for €6 million, but United hooked on an €18 million buy-back clause. Now, Benfica management estimates the 22-year-old’s worth at €60 million.

According to Spanish AS, Real Madrid are working to acquire the former academy player at a greatly reduced price. For that, the La Liga giant will join forces with Manchester United. The Spanish media claim that the Real management is hoping to get help from the Premier League club, with United using the clause to buy back Carreras for €18 million, and then selling the 22-year-old to Real Madrid for up to €35 million.
United get a profit of around 15 million euros for a few hours of legal work, while Real Madrid get away with a heavily discounted left-back they probably had to shell out up to 60 million euros for.
